When it comes to pet-related restrictions, bans aren’t a new concept.
The U.S. has banned the pet-owned and operated veterinary hospital chain PetSafe since January 2015, but it’s just the latest to face a backlash from animal-rights groups and the public.
A petition has been started to ban PetSafe from operating in Massachusetts.
Some people, like former Massachusetts governor Michael Dukakis, have questioned the validity of the ban.
But a recent survey by the Boston Business Journal found that a majority of Americans support bans on animal-intensive industries like pet restaurants and pet grooming shops.
The ban has drawn praise from both sides of the aisle, including President Donald Trump, who has made pet-friendly food a key part of his economic policy.
And a bill in the Massachusetts legislature would ban PetSmart, a popular pet-shopping site, from operating at the state capitol.
